Running Stitch

Let's get stitching!

The running stitch or straight stitch is a basic stitch that allows you to gather your fabric and to sew two pieces of fabric together.

Step one:

Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of the long tail of the thread.

Step Two:

Line up the two pieces of felt that you will be sewing together and pin in place. Poke your needle in between the two pieces of felt on the edge where you will start sewing.  Push your needle through the back piece of felt from the inside of the two pieces.  Pull your needle and thread all the way out of the back piece of felt.

Now your thread is coming out of the bottom piece of felt and the knot in your thread is hidden in between the two pieces of felt.

Step Three:

Bring the thread and needle up and through both pieces of fabric right next to where you started your stitch.

Now your needle and thread are on the top piece of felt.  With your stitch length in mind, poke your needle back down into the felt one stitch length away from where the thread is coming out of the fabric.

That’s your first stitch.

Step Four:

Come back up through the bottom piece of felt and through the top piece with your needle and thread just one stitch length away from your last stitch.

Repeat!
